Note-taking Skills
1. Bring yourself up-to-speed about taking notes:
- Follow this link to the information that you need.
- Read the information. No need to take notes - all the information is provided in the document.
- Feel free to print the information if that works better for you.
- Then, go on to the next activity.
2. After you have completed #1 above, open the following document, What Your Employer Expects, and do the following:
- DO NOT write on the packet.
- Read the information contained in the packet and take notes - you may choose to hand write or use the computer.
- You may find it helpful to use the headings and subheadings present in the text to help organize your notes.
- Remember: there is no right or wrong way to take notes.
Turn in your notes when you are finished.
3. One technique that can be helpful to organize information when taking notes is outlining.
- Follow this link to look up some basic information about outlining.
- Take some notes as you read the information and turn in your notes for grading, when you're done.
4. A technology tool that can assist with the outlining process is Word 2010.
- A small set of Atomic Learning videos have been assigned to you.
- Log onto Atomic Learning and access an Assigned Training called, "Outlining Using Word 2010".
5. Practice outlining using Word - use this handout for the assignment.
- Use Word's outlining view/feature to type the outline (View --> outline)
- Make sure your name, hour & date are in the document header.
- Turn it in when you're finished.
6. Use an outline format to type or re-type your notes from #2 above. Turn in your revised notes when you're finished.
